I first heard about The Price Of Salt in the 1990's after watching A Documentary called "Forbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories Of Lesbian Lives" where Author Ann Bannon who also did her own Books praised the book.
However, I realized that she also did a "Literary Style" that many other Authors Emulate.
Case in Point:
Patricia Highsmith Wrote "The Price Of Salt" under the name of Claire Morgan and when it was Republished, in the 1990's she agreed to take a smaller Salary of $2000.00 instead of $5000.00 as Claire Morgan. She probably felt that since it was the only book written as Claire Morgan, she didn't need to revisit the past.
Her Girlfriend Mariane Meaker wrote "Spring Fire" under the name of "Vin Packer" and "Deliver Us From Evie" as M.E. Kerr.
Nora Roberts who besides being one of the biggest selling Romance Novelists (Her Books Are Sold Every Six Minutes) also writes as JD Robb who does Sci Fi Thrillers.
Stephen King who is the King Of Horror Fiction writes books outside the genre that made him a Superstar most notably Stand By Me and The Novella Rita Hayworth that would later be the inspiration for The Shawshank Redemption.
John Grisham who does Legal Thrillers from A Time To Kill, The Rainmaker, and The Firm also writes books different from what also made him a Literary Superstar when he Writes Calico Joe, Playing For Pizza, A Painted House that became a Hallmark Movie.
Rooney Mara was so right on when she said that "Most Of Patricia Highsmith's Books are of the Criminal Mind but "The Price Of Salt" was about The Amorous Mind.
She was a Pioneer in terms of how a Writer can expand their Writing Style and still remain true to the craft and keep it real.
I also realized that M.E. Kerr was the Lady who also did "Gentlehands" about a Young Sixteen Year Old who finds out about his Grandfather's Past as a Nazi and how it affected him and his Family. I first read The Book when it was Serialized in a Home Ec Magazine for Teens called "Co-Ed".
It was next to "Father Figure" by Richard Peck one of my all time favorite books as a Teenager.
Oh and even before Patricia Highsmith was born, Samuel Clements wrote under the name of Mark Twain. His legacy was acknowledged in a Story in "Little Archie" when the kids were young and he helped Reggie from drowning.
When Little Archie told them about his new friend "Sam" Veronica told him that it was the "Real" name of Mark Twain who lived in Mississippi.
